It’s fair to say that PS5 Pro pre-orders were a bit chaotic when they went live on September 26. Reminiscent of the early days of the PS5, customers were forced to queue to purchase the new and improved console from the PlayStation Direct website. To make matters worse, the PS5 Pro went on sale at the same time as Sony’s 30th Anniversary Collection of consoles and accessories, which were only available in limited quantities. Indeed, the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition was limited to just 12,300 units, which were snapped up in an instant. However, in a worrying turn of events, customers who pre-ordered the regular PS5 Pro or the Anniversary Edition are being urged to check their emails.
In a post on Reddit, a number of PS5 Pro pre-order customers claim to have received an email from Sony confirming that their order had been cancelled.
Some believe the cancellations are due to banks blocking suspicious transactions in a bid to combat fraud, while others speculate that Sony cancelled some pre-orders after accidentally selling too many units.
Either way, it’s worth double checking your emails, bank account and pre-order status, just in case.
Priced at a whopping £699, the PS5 Pro aims to improve on the original PS5 in three main ways. Specifically with a bigger GPU, Advanced Ray-Tracing and AI-driven upscaling.
The GPU will provide rendering that’s up to 45% faster thanks to 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory. This should lead to a better balance between visuals and performance.
Advanced Ray Tracing will provide “more dynamic reflection and refraction of light”, which allows rays to be cast at double and sometimes even triple the speeds of the current PS5.
Then there’s the AI Driven Upscaling, which is said to use “machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail”.
Elsewhere, PS5 Pro Game Boost will give older PS4 and PS5 games an upgrade in the visual and performance department.
Games that will receive a boost include Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Demon’s Souls, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2 and Hogwarts Legacy.
