Queen Elizabeth II passed away at Balmoral in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, without pain and “very peaceful” said her private secretary, Sir Edward Young’s memo.

According to the Daily Mail, the full text of his memo regarding the Queen’s death reads: “Very peaceful. In her sleep. Slipped away. Old age. She wouldn’t have been aware of anything. No pain.”

The King and Queen Camilla had spent an hour with her privately before her passing.

Princess Anne, the late Queen’s senior dresser and a minister from a nearby church all sat bedside the Queen in her final moments, reports the paper.

Now, King Charles revealed why it was Balmoral the Queen had chosen as her final resting place.

During a speech at Holyrood in Edinburgh which marked the 25th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament, King Charles discussed how the region had a special place in the Queen’s heart and remembered it fondly.

According to Charles, his mother was intent on the property being the place where she would see out her life describing Balmoral’s importance to her.

“My late mother especially treasured the time spent at Balmoral, and it was there, in the most beloved of places, where she chose to spend her final days,” he said.

“’We are all, at the end of each day, united by our love of Scotland.”

The late Queen had visited Balmoral Castle every summer right until she died for week-long holidays.

She would begin her stay in late July at Craigowan Lodge before moving into the castle once it shut to visitors in August.

The grounds of Balmoral were very dear to the Queen as Prince Philip had proposed marriage to her in the summer of 1946.

The beauty of Scotland also drew the Queen back each time.

Charles said: “Because of its natural beauty, of course, but also because of its strength of character, based as it is on the extraordinary diversity of its peoples, whose range of ideas, skills, energy, passions, and frequently deeply held beliefs, never cease to inspire.”

Balmoral also functioned as a retreat for her family, escaping the public eye and getting away from her Royal duties.

Despite the late Queen having her heart set on Balmoral in her final days she also had concerns.

Princess Anne said in a BBC documentary: “I think there was a moment when she felt it would be more difficult if she died at Balmoral.

“I think we did try to persuade her that shouldn’t be part of the decision-making process. So I hope she felt that was right in the end because we did.”
