Proudly posting her wedding photos online, Lauren Evens wanted to continue celebrating her marital bliss. But, having married somebody younger, Lauren wasn’t expecting the backlash she received.
“Some people said it was cute that my 10-year-old son was walking me down the aisle,” Lauren said, when in reality it was her partner.
“Others said it was disgusting that I was kissing a young boy… the comments offend me and they are incredibly hurtful,” she told What’s The Jam.
Marrying someone younger didn’t seem like such a big deal when there’s only a two-year age gap. Trolls failed to realise that Lauren was marrying 29-year-old Hannah Kaye, who just happens to look much younger than she is.
“My wife is just very lucky to have incredible genes,” said Lauren. “She is two years younger – I am not getting arrested.”
Lauren added: “Hannah is a tough nut but the comments offend me and they are incredibly hurtful. People think they have the right to call me a predator or a paedophile and that disgusts me. The amount of abuse we have received is just ridiculous.”
Hannah, a specialist engineer who has always appeared younger than her years, often finds herself carded in supermarkets and bars despite nearing 30.
She recounted the online backlash they faced: “The negativity exploded when we uploaded our wedding photos. But even before that, any photo of us together would attract nasty comments, because I look younger.
“Our family have read those comments online and it upsets them, too. They are very protective of us both.”
Hannah continued: “The trolls are so narrow-minded that there is no point engaging with them.”
The couple, who met on Tinder two years ago, made their relationship official when Hannah proposed to Lauren in January 2024.
They celebrated their union at a local registry office in Surrey last month and the couple are optimistic about what lies ahead.
Lauren expressed her contentment by saying: “Strangers online can say what they like but we have never been happier.”
