If your silicone sealant has started to develop black, brown or orange stains, it’s likely mould growth.
Mould loves moisture which is why it often grows on tile grout, silicone sealant, around windows and on walls in kitchens and bathrooms.
Condensation, water leaks, splashes and a lack of ventilation are some of the main causes of mould growth.
One person who was struggling with mould growth on her silicone sealant was Stephanie Richards.
Stephanie Richards asked the Facebook group, ‘Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips’: “Any tips on dealing with black mould on shower sealant? I’ve tried the usual Cillit bang, bleach, and mould remover sprays. Nothing works, it’s a walk-in shower too.”
Stephanie’s post was inundated with responses but the most suggested method was to use HG Mould Remover.
Tina Harris replied: “I highly recommend HG Mould Remover , excellent stuff, spray and leave for 10 minutes and the mould has gone. Can’t beat it.”
Maxine Collins commented: “HG Mould Remover spray. Once you have tried that, you’ll be recommending it to everyone else who asks the same question. Trust me, you won’t regret it!”
HG Mould Remover remover can be bought from Ocado for £5.75, Wickes for £6 and Tesco for £5.25.
On the Tesco website, the product has received a rating of 4.8 out of five with 42 reviews.
One review reads: “Amazing. It’s so good, I’m going to have to paint, because the other parts of the wall look grubby now! Mould disappears in seconds, you can watch it! Won’t be without it again.”
Another agreed and wrote: “You don’t even have to wait 30 minutes for it to work. It does the job in seconds. It’s worth every penny spent.”
However, another customer claimed the product made “no difference at all”. They wrote: “I have used it to clean grouting and silicon seal in the bathroom and it has made no difference at all.
“Maybe the foam would be better as it would stay on the grouting itself rather than dripping down all over tiles but total waste of money.”
Alternatively, Mrs Hinch fans also recommended using Dettol Mould and Mildew spray and Mould Magic to remove the unsightly stains.
Dettol Mould and Mildew spray costs £3.50 from Tesco and £3.75 from Sainsbury’s.
