Horrific scenes in front of shoppers at a busy London market saw at least three people stabbed, with one later dying.
Emergency services rushed to the popular market in Walworth following reports of a multiple stabbing this morning.
A statement by the force read: “An investigation has been launched following the fatal stabbing of a man in Walworth.
“Police were called at around 10:40hrs on Sunday, 10 November, to reports of a number of people stabbed in East Street, SE17.”
Three people, the spokesperson continued, were found injured by officers upon their arrival. One man died at the scene, the Met Police said.
The force continued: “Two other people – a man and a woman – were taken to hospital for treatment. We await an assessment of their condition.”
An arrest was made, with the spokesperson saying: “Officers attended the location along with ambulance colleagues. A man, believed to be aged in his 60s, was arrested at the scene and taken into police custody.”
Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack. However, they said the investigation is at an early stage.
Speaking about the incident, Commander Peter Stevens said: “Tragically, a man lost his life this morning, and officers are working hard to establish exactly what happened and to provide support to his family. My thoughts and sincere sympathies are with them, and with the other people injured.
“Our investigation is at a very early stage. One man was rapidly arrested by officers responding to the incident. At present, although enquiries are ongoing, nobody else is sought.
“The incident is not being treated as terrorism. Enquiries continue, led by dedicated detectives from Specialist Crime.
“I want to thank those people who have already shared their accounts of what they saw with police. I urge anyone with information or footage, or any witnesses yet to speak with police, to get in touch.”
