Sir Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron are expected to plot a last-ditch attempt to grant Ukraine’s missile wish amid concerns Donald Trump could slash the US support for the war-torn country.
So far, Joe Biden and Starmer have stopped short of explicitly giving Kyiv permission to fire the long-distance missiles deep inside Vladimir Putin’s country over concerns over further escalating the conflict – started by Moscow in February 2022.
However, Starmer and Macron are set to discuss whether Biden can be persuaded to give Ukraine permission to do so, according to UK Government insiders reported by the Telegraph.
Storm Shadow is an Anglo-French cruise missile with a maximum range of around 150 miles.
Both London and Washington have been hesitant to fire these missiles as it could push Putin over the edge into retaliating, such as striking air bases in Poland.
If that were to happen, Nato’s Article 5 could be invoked, meaning the military alliance would find itself at war with Russia.
London and Paris’ fresh talks come after Trump vowed to end the Ukraine war on “day one”
The Wall Street Journal suggested that his plan involves a demilitarised zone across the front line and a promise from Kyiv not to join NATO for 20 years.
The Prime Minister will travel to the French capital and meet Macron in Paris today, where he will attend the Armistice Day ceremony in the city.
He is believed to be the first UK Prime Minister to have attended these commemorations since Winston Churchill joined General de Gaulle in 1944.
Here the pair are also expected to discuss the Trump presidency impact on the Middle East and the possibility of a trade war with Europe.
Trump’s approach could be a far cry from Biden’s after Donald Trump Jr said there is no place in his father’s administration for “war hawks”.
Despite alarmist concerns since Trump’s election victory, the former head of MI6 has spoken out saying it could be a good thing for the people of Ukraine.
Sir Dearlove said: “I think that Trump is less risk averse than Biden was in terms of how American weapons might be used in Ukraine. So you could imagine a situation where he takes the restraints off Ukrainian use of longer range American missile capability which the Ukrainians will have.
“The military balance that could be changed very rapidly if the Ukrainians are given the green light to strike more deeply into Russia. They’re fighting at a disadvantage that we all know about.”
