Keep ginger fresh for longer by avoiding 1 common mistake – expert tips

Whether you enjoy a good cup of soothing ginger tea or use it to add a zesty kick to your favourite stir fry, this noble root is a great ingredient to keep on hand in the kitchen.

While it’s easy to assume that keeping ginger in a drawer or on the counter will do, improper storage can shorten its shelf life.

Expert advice can help ensure your fresh ginger stays ready for use in everything from ginger infusions to bakes. So, what’s the key to keeping it fresh for longer?

According to storage expert Vlatka Lake from Space Station, one major mistake people make is peeling the ginger in advance.

She said: “For those of you hoping to store it for a longer period, then the best option is to place it in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag, before stowing away in the fridge.

“When stored this way, ginger root can last up to a month before it begins to mould.

“It’s also important you keep the peel on, if possible, as removing this will speed up the process of decay.”

For short-term storage, keeping ginger in a cool, dark spot like a basement or a shaded countertop works, as long as the peel remains on.

If you’re aiming for a longer shelf life, Vlatka recommends sealing the ginger in a plastic bag and storing it in the fridge, where it can last up to a month.

For those hoping to store ginger for an extended period, the freezer is a great option—just be sure to use a freezer-safe container.

The storage expert explained: “If you’re looking to keep your ginger fresh indefinitely, most of the same steps apply, simply opt for your freezer instead of the fridge and enclose the ginger in a freezer bag or freezer-safe container.

“Unlike other produce, when you come to reaching for it again, you don’t need to allow it time to thaw as frozen ginger is easier to work with, particularly if you’re planning on grating it.”

Knowing how to store ginger will not only preserve its flavour and aroma, but also help maintain its beneficial properties.
