Met Office’s 15-hour snow yellow warning for ten cities | Weather | News

The Met Office has issued a new 15-hour weather warning for snow and ice on Monday and Tuesday that covers ten different cities.

The updated ‘yellow’ alert was issued this morning (Sunday, November 17). It says: “An area of snow may bring disruption to a central swathe of the UK during Monday night and Tuesday morning.”

The new warning covers the East and West Midlands, North East and North West England, Yorkshire and Humber, parts of North Wales and the Scottish borders. The ten cities affected are Manchester, Liverpool, Derby, Nottingham, Durham, Newcastle, Sunderland, Wrexham, Hull and York.

The updated warning comes after the Met Office issued a string of weather alerts, over a three day period. The first comes into effect at 4pm today (Sunday, November 17), covers the very far north of Scotland and remains in place until 11am on Monday morning.

Additional alerts for Monday and Tuesday now cover large parts of the north of England and part of southern Scotland and north wakes. These alerts, warning that snow “may bring disruption to a central swathe of the UK”, come into effect at 7pm on Monday night and remain in force until 10am on Tuesday morning.

The Met Office says: “A period of rain, sleet and snow will occur during Monday evening, overnight into Tuesday morning.
The most likely scenario is for most of the snow to accumulate on hills, with 5 to 10 cm possible above 200 metres and perhaps as much as 15 to 20 cm above 300 metres.

“There is a small chance of snow settling at lower levels, where 5 to 10 cm would prove much more disruptive, but this remains very uncertain. As rain, sleet and snow clear on Tuesday morning, ice may form on untreated surfaces.”

The alert warns that there is a “small chance” that power cuts will occur and that other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected. It also warns that untreated pavements and cycle paths could become impassable.

The national forecaster also says there is a “slight chance” that some rural communities could become cut off, that bus and train services may be delayed or cancelled, with some road closures and longer journey times.

The yellow warning also says there is a “small chance” of road delays – with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel. The Met Office is also warning people they are at risk of injury from slips and falls on icy surfaces.
