M&S, Tesco, Morrisons and Asda sent festive sandwiches to the Express office for a taste test. Only two supermarkets received the highest score possible – five out of five – for their Christmas sandwiches while one came out with the lowest score possible.
While another supermarket scored extremely low for all of their festive sandwich offerings. Starting with Asda, its best Christmas sandwich – gaining 4.5 out of five stars – was its Cracking Christmas Club sandwich (£3.35).
Stacked between granary bread slices – with a white slice in the middle – was mature Cheddar cheese, bacon, chicken, cranberry chutney, and onion stuffing.
Once the reviewer bit into the sandwich, she exclaimed: “That is good!” Taking another bite, she added: “You know what, that’s really good.”
Loving the taste of the chutney, the reviewer Explained why it’s not a five out of five: “Tone it down on the stuffing a little bit, and that will be wow.”
Another top contender was the Asda Hog Roast sandwich (£3) which tasted “better” than what the reviewer thought it would.
Lavished in Bromley apple sauce, seasoned mayonnaise, and fried onions, the reviewer liked how the sandwich “got the tastebuds going”, adding there was a “generous healing of meat”.
Even though their preference would be for brown over white bread, in this case, “the soft white bread actually worked” well. The reviewer quipped “it could only be improved off the roast came off the BBQ”, giving it a four out of five rating.
Other options, such as Asda’s Boxing Day Sandwich (£2.50) – full of chicken, ham, coleslaw and balsamic onion chutney – didn’t get the best review.
The Boxing Day Sandwich got a meagre two-out-of-five rating because the onion was “very strong” – not one to have if you go under the mistletoe at Christmas. The reviewer scorned: “Very disappointing… but it’s only 385kl [calories] so it’s not bad.”
Only marginally better was Asda’s Let it Spice Curry Wrap (£3), which is “essentially a twist on a coronation chicken wrap”, which “had a good crunch”.
Standout Christmas sandwiches include Tesco’s Ho-Ho-Hog Wrap of pulled pork and apple slaw, M&S Pigs In Blanket Sandwich and M&S Surf and Turf Brioche Rolls – all five stars!
Maybe it was all the sandwich testing, but by the time Morrisons festive range came around, the reviews were not glowing.
Morrisons The Best Slow Cooked Beef and Roast Potato sandwich wasn’t popular, with a couple people commenting on not liking the potato. “Stodgy potato,” one reviewer note. “Bit dry,” said another. “I don’t like the potato in the sandwich.”
But another beamed: “The flavours are really good.” This made one other reviewer concede: “The beef is nice.”
Averaging the score, Morrisons The Best Slow Cooked Beef and Roast Potato sandwich scored about a three. As for the worst festive offering, Morrison’s Pigs Under Blankets was only given one star. “I don’t like it,” the reviewer said.
And some naughty little elves were at it again – taking the food and not leaving a review for Tesco’s Festive Chicken and Bacon Wrap and Cracking Curry West Sausage and Onions.
