Mum’s £6 hack to banish mould is one ‘everyone should know’

Although the winter months may be behind us, many homes across the UK are susceptible to , especially in certain areas of the house. As well as looking unbecoming, mould can also pose a serious threat to your health if left to build up.

While there are numerous chemical-based  products out there which are said to banish mould in a flash, an Australian mum has a clever method to eliminate mould from around your home which she says “everyone should know”.

Anita Birges is a mum who is based in Sydney and shares her household on TikTok via her page @miseenplace_au. Her simple solution is a rather cost-effective one too, using two natural products that won’t cost you more than £6.

“Do you have mould in your drawers or in your bedroom? Have I got the best mould prevention hack for you. It’s all about absorbing moisture,” said Anita.

“All you need to do is get yourself some mega chalk and grab yourself some clove oil.”

According to Anita, dabbing just a few drops onto a large piece of chalk and then popping them in the affected area can help to clear up mould.

Mega chalk can be purchased for as little as £2.00 for a pack of 12 from Hobbycraft. Clove oil can be purchased from Boots for £2.99 for a 10ml bottle.

“Put a few drops of pure clove oil on jumbo sticks of blackboard chalk,” she explained. “Then place or hang them in cupboards and drawers around the house and allow the scent to waft around killing mould spores.”

Though TikTok is rife with all manner of hacks, it seems there is some science to this one.

Clove oil is often recommended for tackling mould because it is able to kill spores. The clove oil also has anti-fungal properties and may be useful for cleaning up small areas of mould before it takes hold and spreads too far. It can be applied directly to mould to remove patches.

Generally, a quarter of a teaspoon of oil of cloves to one litre of water is recommended to kill mould on most surfaces. The chalk acts as an absorbent, especially in areas prone to condensation.
