A woman has been rushed to hospital with “serious injuries” after a horror crash on a major stretch of UK motorway has sparked travel chaos this afternoon. Emergency services including an air ambulance rushed to the scene on the A1(M) in Hertfordshire this morning (Wednesday, April 3).

East of England Ambulance service confirmed that they sent “two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, and two ambulance officer vehicles” to the scene, while Essex and Herts Air Ambulance was also dispatched to the site of the crash on the A1 near Hitchin.

An update on the National Highways website reads: “The A1(M) southbound in Hertfordshire is closed between J9 Letchworth Gate Interchange (Letchworth, Hitchin A505) and J8 Corey Mill Interchange (Stevenage A602).

“This is due to a serious incident. The scene is being managed by Hertfordshire Police with units from Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue, East of England Ambulance Service and a helicopter from Essex & Hertfordshire Air Ambulance.”
