If your shower head jets are blocked and water is spluttering out of it, you likely have limescale build-up.

Theresa Choh-Lee, brand leader of Grohe, a manufacturer of bathroom solutions and kitchen fittings, said limescale build-up can “reduce the water flow in your shower and even block the nozzles completely.”

Sometimes, if there are lots of mineral deposits in your shower head, mould can develop, which can cause the jets to turn black.

Removing limescale from shower heads can be difficult, especially if your shower head is very high up or large.

Some people resort to using chemicals such as limescale removers or bleach but these can be costly and can damage your shower head if they’re not used properly.

For those looking for a quick and easy solution, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch have shared a simple hack for banishing shower head limescale without scrubbing.

The hack involves using a sandwich or freezer bag and white vinegar. To remove the limescale, simply place the shower head in the bag of white vinegar and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes or overnight.

Several cleaning enthusiasts posted on the Facebook group, ‘Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips’, recommending the method.

Kathleen Hanlon said: “Put some white vinegar in a freezer bag. Put the shower head in, tie with a elastic band and leave it for a while then rinse.”

Vanessa Rodway replied: “White vinegar in a polythene bag. Wrap around the shower head with an elastic band and leave for 15 to 20 minutes. Dissolves limescale.”

Gloria Clarkson-Wanders commented: “I put mine in a plastic bag with vinegar. Cleans limescale and black gunge.”

It seems Mrs Hinch fans aren’t the only ones who recommend the genius cleaning hack. Alex Woods, bathroom expert at Victorian Plumbing, also suggested using white vinegar.

Alex said white vinegar is a great cleaning solution because it can “break down limescale and bacteria”.

He continued: “Carefully soaking the shower head in a bag of white vinegar overnight removes any mineral buildup.”

He also suggested using white vinegar to clean mirrors and glass. “White vinegar is also an effective mirror and glass cleaner; mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a bottle to leave surfaces streak-free and shiny,” he added.
