Warning issued to anyone putting their potatoes in the freezer

Experts have warned that this food should not be kept in the freezer due to health concerns.

According to the The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) freezing certain common types of food could lead to health issues.

It said potatoes should not be stored in the freezer, despite many commonly storing the item there.

Potatoes are a versatile and commonly consumed vegetable that can be prepared in various delicious ways.

However, like any other food, when improperly stored, prepared, or cooked, potatoes can potentially cause food poisoning.

AESAN provided a list of foods to avoid freezing including raw fruits and vegetables like lettuce and tomatoes, potatoes, eggs with their shells, high-fat foods, mayonnaise, and fried foods.

Freezers should be kept at -18C or less or there could be health risks from the microorganisms found in food, reports GloucestershireLive.

Microorganisms can activate when the food is defrosting and will prove to be a health risk if they’re consumed in large quantities, reports El Tiempo.

The agency also said people should ensure to defrost their food properly before reheating it.

It said the best way to do this is through the defrost function on the microwave.

You should also make sure not to freeze any hot foods as it “can negatively affect other foods.”

Meanwhile, the NHS also stresses the importance of correct food storage and reheating.

Young children are most likely to be impacted by the bacteria from frozen food as it can lead to food poisoning.

The Food Standards Agency say you can avoid cross-contamination by storing individual foods in clean, sealed containers which stops objects, bacteria and chemicals getting into the food.

It also said frozen food should be defrosted thoroughly in the fridge and that the time this takes depends on the food itself. Once food is defrosted, it should be used within 24 hours.
