When inevitably stained, bedding and socks can be a pain to restore, especially if you want to take the natural route.
While bleach can look as though it fixes the issue, it merely makes the stains and can damage the fabric at the same time.
What’s more, if overused, bleach can be the cause of yellowing. Bleach weakens the fibres and returns them to their original colour, yellow.
Before you resign to buying new bedding and socks due to their worn look, consider trying a suggestion just like Sandra Howard, who sought advice from the Mrs Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook page after being let down by numerous laundry products.
In her request for a solution, she posted: “Does anyone know how to get dirty marks out of white socks and bed sheets? My daughter’s socks and bed sheets are horrendous and I feel like I’ve tried everything.”
While many swear by the whitening duo of baking soda and white vinegar for items like socks and sheets, other members of the group offered an alternative natural wonder soda crystals.
Gemma Phillips’ tip stood out: “Soak in soda crystals for half an hour before popping on a hot white wash. Miracle worker!”
Echoing this sentiment, Lorraine Warner advised: “Soda crystals and a scoop of detergent soak in hot water and then put amongst wash.”
Keelee Wren also endorsed this method: “Soak with soda crystals for 30 minutes then put in the washing machine. They’ll come out dazzling.”
Furthermore, Rachel Wortley shared her routine: “Leave to soak in soda crystals. Then add them to a white wash and add a big scoop of soda crystals. All natural and work wonders.”
Catherine Bishop suggested: “Soda crystals in hot water are game-changing. You can boil the socks on the cooker like they used to years ago. It works.”
Julia Mansfield advised: “Soda crystals and boiling water then just let them have a simmer for about half an hour and then put them on a white wash. Always works for me.”
While soda crystals are not a bleaching agent, they are superb for getting rid of stains from your laundry.
Alternatively, if households discover that soda crystals aren’t effective on their stained socks, supermarket laundry whitening products like Napisan and Ace for Whites come highly recommended.
