Windows often become foggy and streaky with condensation during the cold weather, but many people do not realise how big of an issue it can become if not cleaned away.
Condensation is moisture that forms when a cold glass surface comes into contact with the warm air inside a home and can turn ino dampness if not wiped away.
Dampness can spread onto window frames, walls or ceilings and will eventually turn into mould, which can be tricky to get rid of once it makes its way into a house.
However, Amy Johnson, the founder of She Wears Many Hats, has shared she has a “super simple” homemade cleaner to clear windows that only has three ingredients.
Amy said: “I’m happy to be sharing the best homemade window cleaner with you. It has won us over. After years of filmy residue, we can see clearly now. The film is gone.”
How to make a homemade window cleaner
You will need:
- 480ml of water
- 60ml of white vinegar
- Half a tsp of washing-up liquid
How does it work?
Washing-up liquid and white vinegar can greatly reduce condensation as they both create a thin barrier on the glass to stop water droplets from being able to form.
White vinegar is a mild acid which can break down any grime or grease on windows and can attract moisture to stop condensation.
Washing-up liquid contains surfactants which reduce the tension of water, which stops water building up into droplets as it spreads the moisture out into a thin layer so it will evaporate quickly.
Not only will this homemade cleaner discourage condensation but it will also clean your windows so you do not have to worry about any foggy streaks or water droplets for the rest of winter.
Instructions
All you need to do is combine warm water, white vinegar and washing-up liquid in a bucket. Alternatively, you can mix all the ingredients together into a spray bottle and use that instead.
Lightly spread the solution onto the inside of your windows and make sure to also use a soft-bristled brush or sponge. Before the glass has a chance to dry, wipe it thoroughly with clean water to rinse.
Use a clean dry cloth to then polish the glass to make sure no streaks are left behind. Do this once a week or whenever you notice condensation returning and your windows should stay dry and clean for much longer.
