When it comes to natural beauty, few places on Earth can rival the breathtaking landscapes of this North American country. 

The nation is famous for its huge mountains, forests, and rugged coastlines, and it also holds a very cool title – it is home to more lakes than any other nation on the planet.

The country in question is Canada. Stretching across nearly four million square miles, Canada has an astonishing number of lakes, with estimates ranging from two to three million at any given time. 

Of these, nearly one million are permanent bodies of water larger than 25 acres, making up 62% of all similarly sized lakes worldwide.

In fact, around 9% of Canada’s total surface area – 350,000 square miles – is covered by freshwater.

Topping the list of Canada’s huge lakes is Lake Superior. Shared with the United States, the lake covers over 82,100 square kilometres, making it the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. 

Despite its chilly waters, Lake Superior is popular with outdoor enthusiasts and offers activities like boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. 

Another standout is Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. At 2,105 feet deep, it’s the deepest lake in Canada. 

Its crystal-clear waters are fed by the Mackenzie River system. Part of the lake also extends into Thaidene Nene National Park Reserve.

Another favourite is Lake Louise in Banff National Park, which is one of the country’s most popular destinations. 

It is famous for its emerald-green waters set against snow-capped peaks and beautiful pine forests.

In other cool news, Canada also has the longest coastline in the world, measuring over 120,000 miles. The coastline is surrounded by three oceans and makes up almost 57% of the world’s total coastline.
