Arsenal player ratings vs Newcastle: William Saliba tormented as two others get 4/10 | Football | Sport

Arsenal were given the runaround by Newcastle United as they suffered a four-goal aggregate loss in their Carabao Cup semi-final. Goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon secured a 2-0 win for the Magpies at St James’ Park, following their victory by the same scoreline at the Emirates last month.

Alexander Isak deserves credit for his own scintillating display in the north-east, where Gabriel Magalhaes and particularly William Saliba were all at sea.

Here, Express Sport takes you through how each Gunners player performed on the night…

Arsenal player ratings vs Newcastle (4-3-3)

David Raya: 4

Made a mess of an early clearance, picked two balls out of his net and played a hospital pass to Declan Rice which resulted in Gordon’s goal.

Jurrien Timber: 5 (Calafiori, 78)

Oblivious to what would have been a simple through-ball for Kai Havertz early on, and a couple of untidy moments later in the game.

William Saliba: 3 (booked)

He’ll be having nightmares about Isak and Gordon tonight. Unquestionably Saliba’s worst game in an Arsenal shirt. Got spun by Isak for Murphy’s opener and given the slip by Gordon on multiple occasions, one of which resulted in a yellow card.

Gabriel Magalhaes: 5

Not alert to the rebound Murphy scored from. Sent a nervous header back to Saliba, who Gordon immediately dispossessed before nearly beating Raya from range.

Myles Lewis-Skelly: 6

A couple of sharp moments but he spent most of the evening clinging on just like the rest of his team-mates.

Martin Odegaard: 6 (Sterling, 61)

Dropped deep to control the game when Arsenal were under the cosh early on, and did his job well. But then spooned an absolute sitter off the outside of the post, and proceeded to play within himself until being taken off on the hour mark.

Thomas Partey: 5 (Jorginho, 78)

Dispossessed in midfield for an early Isak goal which was disallowed for offside. Generally unable to stamp his authority on the game.

Declan Rice: 5

Newcastle kept him really quiet. Had his pocket picked by Fabian Schar directly before the Gordon goal.

Gabriel Martinelli: 6 (Nwaneri, 37)

Used good feet to set up a gilt-edged chance for Odegaard, which the Norwegian missed. Pulled up clutching his hamstring towards the end of the first half – another big worry for Mikel Arteta.

Kai Havertz: 4 (booked)

Created a chance for Leandro Trossard with a low cut-back but that was as good as it got. Picked up a silly booking, hit a loose pass in midfield, sent a cross miles long and was no physical match for Sven Botman.

Leandro Trossard: 7 (Merino, 61)

Came up with an incisive pass to create a good chance for Odegaard in the first half, and then a lovely flick leading to another opportunity for the Norwegian, via input from Martinelli.

SUBS

Ethan Nwaneri: 7

Offered a lot more than Martinelli on the right wing, giving Dan Burn and Lewis Hall something to think about. Crossing could use some work on his weak side.

Mikel Merino: 5

Made little to no impact on the game.

Raheem Sterling: 5 (booked)

Still looks a shadow of the player he once was.

Jorginho: N/A

A late addition.

Riccardo Calafiori: N/A

A late addition.
