Tennis sisters both suffer brutal 6-0 6-0 defeats just five days apart | Tennis | Sport

It’s not been a good week for the Kudermetova sisters on the WTA Tour.

Just five days after her elder sibling suffered a 6-0 6-0 double-bagel defeat in Abu Dhabi, Polina Kudermetova also failed to win a game in a brutal first-round loss at the WTA 1000 in Doha.

No. 10 seed Daria Kasatkina needed just 42 minutes to breeze past the younger Kudermetova sister, securing a perfect victory to advance to round two.

Polina got into the main draw of the Qatar Open as a lucky loser just two days after losing to Alycia Parks in the final round of qualifying.

Aged just 21, the younger Kudermetova sister was making her main draw debut at WTA 1000 level. But it was a tournament to forget for the world No. 59, who failed to win a game.

Kasatkina breezed through the match, taking the first set in 19 minutes. By the time she stepped up to serve for the victory at 6-0 5-0, only 40 minutes had passed.

The 10th seed got the job done, securing a double-bagel to get revenge on Polina, who beat her at last month’s Brisbane International.

Afterwards, Kasatkina admitted her three-set loss to Polina in Brisbane had been on her mind. “Well that’s exactly what was running through my head during the whole match because I remember what happened one month ago let’s say,” she said.

“I was trying to be really focused because I knew that with any player, as soon as you lose your focus, in the blink of an eye the match can change completely. Plus here the conditions are tricky, it’s very windy.”

The Russian was happy to get off the court as quickly as possible. She added: “Right now I’m happy with the win, going to the next round not spending much time on court which is important when you have to play day-by-day.”

Polina’s brutal 6-0 6-0 defeat comes just five days after her elder sister Veronika was handed the first double-bagel loss of the 2025 season on the WTA Tour.

Last Wednesday, Veronika suffered a 6-0 6-0 defeat to Belinda Bencic in the second round of the Abu Dhabi Open. The 27-year-old had also made it into the tournament as a lucky loser.

The world No. 52 lasted a little longer on the court, with the match wrapping up in 65 minutes. Bencic went on to lift the trophy – her first title since returning from a pregnancy break.

A former top-10 player, Veronika is also competing in Doha this week after qualifying for the tournament. She has already fared better than her younger sibling, winning the first set of her match against Magda Linette.

But she couldn’t escape another bagel, with Linette taking the second set 6-0 to force a decider. Linette went on to win 3-6 6-0 6-4, meaning defeat for both Kudermetova sisters in the main draw.
