Top car mechanic Scotty Kilmer has warned one mistake could leave certain petrol and diesel cars “destroyed” in a major blow. 

Getting behind the wheel and doing burnouts may appear like a bit of light fun for many unaware of the possible consequences. 

According to Scotty, conducting the move behind the wheel of an automatic car was a massive red flag with major impacts likely. 

He warned lighting up the rears could leave the transmission heavily damaged which is one of the key components in combustion petrol and diesel models. 

Replacing this vital component can set motorists back thousands of pounds in a concern for cash-strapped motorists.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Scotty said: “Today I’m going to tell you why not to do burnouts in a car with an automatic transmission. 

“Now in the first case this modern Camry can’t do burnouts, it has traction control. The machine will not let you spin the wheels. 

“But an older car like this ’07 Matrix which does not have traction control, yes it’s old but it can still do burnouts. 

“But you don’t want to do burnouts in an automatic transmission that strains so much to make the wheels spin it wears the internal parts of the transmission out much faster. 

“Over the years I’ve had scores of young drivers tow me their car and I’ve said ‘what’s happened?’ and they say ‘well I was doing a burnout, it made a noise and then it wouldn’t move anywhere’.”

A new transmission is likely to cost a four-figure sum to replace with bills varying on the extent of the damage and size of the vehicle. 

Roughly, road users can expect to pay between £500 and £3,000 for a manual transmission replacement. 

Meanwhile, automatic transmissions can range from £1,000 to over £5,000 in some cases.
