Potatoes are widely used in cooking due to their versatility. However, they sprout or spoil quickly.
If not stored properly, potatoes can develop sprouts or start rotting due to moisture or light exposure.
Since spoiled or overly sprouted potatoes are often thrown away, it leads to unnecessary food waste.
But experts have shared this little-known food storage hack that keeps potatoes fresh for three times longer.
Management specialists Wheeldon Brothers revealed a simple trick involving an apple that can extend potato freshness up to three times longer.
They explained: “Storing potatoes with an apple helps prevent sprouting and keeps them fresher for longer. It’s an easy way to reduce waste and make your groceries last.”
The little-known trick that has become quite popular on social media works because apples naturally release ethylene gas.
The waste management experts added: “Ethylene gas helps regulate the ripening process, which can slow sprouting in potatoes.
“For the best results, combine this method with proper storage – keeping potatoes in a cool, dark, and dry environment.”
Traditionally, storing potatoes in a cupboard or pantry was the go-to method. But modern advice from WRAP and Love Food Hate Waste now suggests that refrigerating potatoes below 5°C extends their shelf life even further.
The expert explained: “Refrigerating potatoes can keep them fresh up to three times longer. Earlier concerns about acrylamide formation have been debunked – modern research shows that fridge storage is safe.”
It’s important to regularly check potatoes for sprouting or green patches, as these can contain harmful toxins, the experts have warned.
They added: “Sprouted or green potatoes should not be eaten,” warns the waste management specialist. “To keep your potatoes in top condition, store them properly and check them often for any signs of spoilage.”
