You’ll never be able to hear the Xbox starting sound the same way again.
Millions of households across the UK own some sort of gaming console, with the top two choices for most people being either an Xbox or a PlayStation. There’s a huge divide between the two gaming titans, however, and many are fiercely loyal to the brand they believe delivers the superior product.
The biggest difference between the two is the exclusive titles you can get on each. For example, you won’t be able to play franchises like God of War, The Last of Us, or Horizon on the Xbox. Similarly, PlayStation gamers can’t get their hands on franchises such as Halo and Gears of War.
But now, gaming fans are talking about a new difference that’s been spotted between the consoles – the Xbox makes a particularly odd sound when you first switch it on.
Shared in a video on TikTok that’s been going viral, one woman uncovered the bizarre detail after switching on her console, as she said it sounded like the start of a very famous song.
Haley said she was inspired to make her video after seeing another clip of a man who stated that switching on a MacBook sounds like the beginning of Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O’Connor.
After seeing that clip, she declared she was ready to “speak her truth,” as she declared that turning on an Xbox sounded just like the beginning of Gimme, Gimme, Gimme by ABBA – or Hung Up by Madonna, which samples the ABBA track.
The woman then switched on her Xbox so that viewers could hear the short sound and followed it up by humming the rest of the famous song intro so that she could prove the sounds matched up.
Commenters on the video were split over what they believed the sound reminded them of. Many agreed with Haley, but several others said it sounded more like the intro to Apple by Charli XCX.
One person said: “To me, it sounds like a faster version of the intro to Apple by Charli XCX.” But one who agreed with Haley wrote: “Yes! I sing the opening line every time, and my boyfriend doesn’t get it.” And a third posted: “Nah, the moment you said the song I got it and can’t believe I never thought of it!”
Others poked fun at Haley’s poor job of singing the rest of the intro, as they said it sounded more akin to the main theme in the Legend of Zelda games than an ABBA song.
Plenty of commenters also took it upon themselves to share their own niche experiences with hearing short sounds that always remind them of certain songs – including some of the noises heard on aeroplanes.
Someone said: “The call bell on a plane sounds like the start of the Home Alone theme song, and I’ll die on that hill!”
Another shared: “Nespresso machine is like Stronger by Britney Spears.”
And a third added: “My Ninja air fryer’s finishing sound makes me think of the James Bond theme.”
