Gardeners urged to put cardboard in their garden for ‘vital reason’

Lots of people are looking for ways to try and boost their gardens at this time of year.

Now, you may be able to do just that thanks to a simple gardening trick. An expert has urged all garden lovers to place cardboard in their outdoor spaces for a pretty vital reason.

According to Ish, who’s known as gardening.with.ish on TikTok, it can work wonders for creating a “fantastic weed membrane”. This will help to “suppress” any weed growth from coming over the top.

But, it does breakdown. This means, over time, the roots of the plant above it will grow through and hopefully prevent any weeds from coming up. As great as this is, it isn’t quite where its uses end.

It can also aid with water retention as it can help to soak up “quite a bit” of water. It will help to hold some moisture to ensure your ground stays watered for longer too, according to the expert.

Ish said: “Now, when that cardboard has decomposed, you think ‘oh, it’s a bit useless’, but actually the organic material in cardboard improves soil quality and also improves drainage, which is another fantastic benefit for a lot of my flowers in the summer.

“You may have noticed, while I’ve been filming this video, I’ve also been lining the bottom of the handmade cold frame, and cardboard works as a fantastic insulating layer too.

“So, all of that cold ground temperature won’t rise up into the cold frame and it will keep it warmer in there for a little bit longer. It also works as a fantastic mulch too to protect some of your plants from cold weather too.

“So, cardboard is massively beneficial in your garden. If you’ve got some, make sure you use it well.”

Since the video was shared, it’s been viewed hundreds of times, and people were quick to comment too. People had all sorts of thoughts and ideas.

One person said: “I have covered my bulbs with cardboard. I don’t know what’s digging them up.”

Another wrote: “This is another video of yours I’ve watched. Yet another fab idea. Why didn’t I know this? Thank you.”

A third also replied: “The one video that hasn’t cost me money. I have lots of cardboard. Going to use them for the beds for all the seeds you’ve had me buy so far.”

Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “I’ve been doing this for years, and people laughed at me. Glad to see you endorsing this old-fashioned method of weed suppression.”
