A motoring expert has urged all drivers to make sure one part of their car is cleaned regularly in a bid to prevent huge fines and a higher risk of serious accidents.
Despite the days getting longer, the UK is still experiencing a bout of cold and wet weather that makes cars much dirtier, even after short journeys.
Whilst few drivers like washing their car during winter, Graham Conway, Managing Director of Select Car Leasing, suggested motorists should always make sure their windscreen is clear.
He warned: “Glare caused by low winter sun can be an absolute nightmare for motorists during winter and early spring, particularly as the days get longer and we experience brighter mornings and cheerier afternoons.
“And if you’ve got a dirty windscreen, the glare can be exacerbated to the point that you can barely see through it. Keeping the outside of your window clean is a relatively simple job – deploy your screen wash and let the wipers work their magic.”
According to the Highway Code, drivers must make sure that all of their vehicle’s windows are clean and free from obstruction in order to ensure a good view of the road.
Those with windows that are obscured by dirt would face larger blind spots and could take longer to react to sudden scenarios on the road, greatly increasing the chances of accidents.
As a result, drivers spotted behind the wheel of a vehicle with a dirty windscreen can face three penalty points and a £100 fine. However, in more serious cases, the fine could skyrocket to £5,000.
To help avoid facing fines, Select Car Leasing recommended that drivers use rubbing alcohol or vinegar to clean the windscreen, which can help to quickly cut down on grease.
They added: “Grab some rubbing alcohol, also known as ‘Isopropyl alcohol’, which you can order online for a few quid.
“Vinegar is a good alternative, as is vodka. Put a small amount on a cloth and use it to wipe down the windscreen. The alcohol will quickly get rid of any grease and grime.”
No matter what they use to clean the vehicle windscreen, Select Car Leasing suggested that drivers use a soft and dry microfibre cloth, which will eliminate the risk of scratches.
Once the rubbing alcohol is applied, drivers should quickly dry it off with another cloth in order to avoid streaks from forming, wiping the glass surface in a circular motion.
Finally, spraying a small amount of dedicated glass cleaner on the vehicle’s windows will help to give them even more clarity.
