Driving instructor confirms what ‘mind-boggling’ parking signs means

Parking can often be a headache for drivers.

It always seems to be a challenge to find a legal spot and to squeeze into tight spaces. But, even more perplexing for many motorists is the task of grappling with the meaning of parking signs – something that can confuse even experienced drivers.

Viral TikTok sensation and driving instructor Annie Winterburn has demystified one particular sign that routinely stumps people by laying out its meaning in her latest video.

With an image of the sign to hand, Annie cleared up the confusion, explaining: “There’s free parking – you can park here for free. But Monday to Saturday, between 8am and 6pm, you can only park for one hour.

“It’s busy here – we don’t want you parking for a long time, and no return within one hour. What does that mean? Well, it means you can’t return, you can’t come back.

“When you’ve driven away, you can’t come back to one of these spaces. Well, not for one hour. That means you can’t drive out of the parking space, drive around the block and come back to one of these parking spaces.”

Annie then concludes her lesson, by saying: “You’ve got to leave it for other people but, after an hour has passed, you can come back. I hope that makes sense.”

The video has gone viral, racking up hundreds of views, and comments have poured in with all sorts of reactions to Annie’s revelations. Despite her best efforts to clarify, the sign is still leaving many scratching their heads over its complexity.

One viewer expressed gratitude, saying: “Thank you. I always ask what that means. Now I know.”

Curiosity led another to question enforcement, asking: “I’ve always wondered with these. When a traffic warden comes, how do they know you’ve parked for over/under an hour?”

Yet, some still remained utterly perplexed, with one commenter adding: “So do I pay?”
