Get ‘old money’ feeling at home with ‘best’ bedroom wall colour

An interior decorator and ‘former rich person’ has shared what colour you should paint your bedroom in order to stick to the ‘old money’ aestethic – even if you’re on a budget.

One of the biggest home interior trends in recent years is ‘old money’, where people purposefully design their homes to look like they have benefitted from generations of wealth.

Kiki Astor is a romance author and an expert on all things ‘old money’ has shared her expertise from her own life living in Montecito, California, about what the best colours are for decorating your bedroom in the luxurious style.

“There’s only one appropriate colour to paint your bedroom in the old money aesthetic. Some of you won’t like it, so go ahead and prove me wrong,” she said in her TikTok video.

“Oh, I know that psychologists say, ‘Oh, you should have a blue bedroom, it promotes sleep, it’s so restful’ – what do they know about style?”

However she went on to say that if people still want blue rooms, you can break up the colour with art, persian rugs and brown furniture. She explained: “If you don’t do that, it’s going to look like a nursery. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

She then moved on to explain the reasons why you shouldn’t choose one of a series of other popular colours for your bedroom.

“I know that I’ve said that green is the most old money colour to paint most rooms in your house, but not your bedroom,” she said, arguing that the green paint would ‘make you look like a corpse’ when you’re getting undressed.

White is also off the table, as Kiki argued a bedroom isn’t an art gallary. She continued: “Not red, that awakens passions. Do not paint it grey, people used to know how to use grey appropriately, that knowledge has been lost.”

So what colour should you paint your bedroom?

“The only appropriate colour to paint a bedroom is pink,” Kiki said. “Not bubblegum pink, not hot pink. No, you paint it the sort of neutral pink that you can tell your husband is beige.

“He’ll believe you. I promise he believes everything you say.”

People quickly took to the comments to share their own thoughts on the matter, with many agreeing that a neutral pink is the perfect colour for a bedroom.

“As a lady with a pink bedroom who told her husband it’s beige…. yes,” one viewer shared, while another user wrote: “This is true y’all it’s the coziest possible color.”

A third person said: “My primary room was going to be green. I am yellow toned. Thank you for saving me from myself.”

However, one person argued against what Kiki said by claiming: “Old money here! We actually wallpaper our walls.”

Another viewer joked: “I’m no money and my bedroom is the landlord special.”
