La Liga match abandoned due to safety concerns with thousands inside | Football | Sport

Supporters in attendance at the Estadio de la Ceramica have been left furious after La Liga postponed a match between Villarreal and Espanyol after the originally scheduled kick-off time. Fans had already entered the stadium in their thousands in anticipation of the Spanish top-flight clash, which was set to get underway at 8pm.

However, they were instructed to go home seven minutes after the game should have started due to the risk of flooding. Rain that had started to pour over the stadium was expected to get much heavier, which forced the unpopular decision. A message displayed on the big screen read: “Due to a weather alert, we ask spectators to leave the stadium calmly and follow the instructions of security personnel.”

Spanish reports claim loudspeakers around the Estadio de la Ceramica relayed the message, confirming that the match had been postponed.

Supporters fumed at the announcement, with one video shared on social media featuring boos from the disappointed spectators who had been denied a game.

Villarreal president Fernando Roig Alfonso looked visibly disappointed as he was pictured taking a phone call on the pitch.

A Villarreal statement read: “Due to the safety recommendations because of the risk of flooding as a result of the current weather conditions in Castellon.

“The Judge of Professional Competitions has decided to postpone today’s match between Villarreal CF and RCD Espanyol de Barcelona, which was scheduled to kick off at 9pm CET.”

Espanyol shared a message of their own, writing: “We want to wish our fans a safe and happy return home. We deeply regret this. Thank you for always being there.”

La Liga also published written confirmation on social media, posting: “Due to the weather alert and following safety recommendations, the match between Villarreal CF and RCD Espanyol on matchday 26 of #LALIGAEASPORTS, which was scheduled to take place this Monday, has been postponed. The new date and time will be announced shortly.”

Villarreal were aiming to apply pressure on the La Liga’s four Champions League spots. A win would have pushed the Yellow Submarine just one point behind fourth-place Athletic Bilbao.

Meanwhile, Espanyol are just three points above the relegation zone as they fight to stay among Spain’s elite next season.

Villarreal are next in action when they travel to Alaves on Saturday, while Espanyol have to wait until next Monday to host Girona.

There isn’t yet confirmation on when the postponed match will be played.
