A recent poll of 2,000 adults has revealed that an overwhelming 92% have cancelled social meetups, with 11% admitting they do so “often or always”.
More than a quarter confessed to cancelling two or more plans in the past month, while 22% acknowledged that they sometimes make arrangements already knowing they’ll later back out.
The research, conducted via OnePoll, revealed the most commonly cancelled commitments include a night out, meeting a friend for coffee, and work parties.
Despite 36% wanting to say “yes” to the activities they enjoy, “life admin” frequently gets in the way for over one in ten respondents. Others prioritised work commitments or simply cited a lack of energy.
A fifth of those surveyed claimed they don’t have enough hours in the day to balance both household chores and social events. However, 38% believe more socializing would bring more joy and fun to their lives.
Many Brits report feeling guilty about choosing enjoyable activities over responsibilities. Although 38% agreed that participating in more social activities would lead to a greater sense of fun, the consensus remains: there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to do it all.
The research was commissioned ahead of National Lottery Open Week taking place from the 15th-23rd March. The week sees venues which are funded by the organisation offer free or discounted entry and special offers as a thank you to players for the £30m they raise weekly for good causes.
“As a mum of two young kids, I know full well how manic life can get,” said Ellie Taylor, comedian and National Lottery Open Week ambassador.
“The constant juggle trying to get through the never-ending to-do list can be a lot at the best of times, and it’s too easy to say no to things. But it’s important to find time for the things we want to do as much as the things we have to do.”
Ellie added: “I’m so glad to have had the opportunity to say yes to new experiences that have come my way over the years. I couldn’t have foreseen everything I’ve learned, the memories I’ve made and the positive impact saying yes has had on my life.”
