New WW2 thriller tells true story of Nazi resistance spy’s plot against Hitler | Films | Entertainment

One of the most inspiring anti-Nazi German heroes of World War 2 was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran pastor who vocally condemned Adolf Hitler’s euthanasia program and genocidal persecution of the Jews.

A Nazi resistance spy, who was involved in smuggling Jews out of Nazi Germany, he was accused of being part of the July 20 plot to assassinate Hitler.

As a result, he was tried and hanged on April 9 1945, just days before the dictator himself took his own life in the final days of World War 2.

And now, this courageous historical figure has received the biopic treatment as Bonhoeffer, which is out today in UK cinemas.

Check out our exclusion interview with writer-director Todd Komarnicki, who shares why this true story is more relevant than ever.

The new World War 2 film’s synopsis reads: “When a pacifist is called to a political act that could change the course of history, how will a man of honour respond? This is the true story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a man who preached love while plotting the assassination of an evil tyrant. With world-shattering stakes, Bonhoeffer begs the question, how far will you go to stand up for what’s right? BONHOEFFER shares the true story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pacifist pastor determined to live his life with uncompromising political and spiritual courage while choosing to live in Berlin during the Third Reich. Conspiring to bring an end to the Nazi regime, he fearlessly spoke the truth while facing unyielding oppression and evil. His impact is still felt around the world today. “

Bonhoeffer is out now in UK cinemas.
