How to remove moss lawns fast while making grass greener and thicker

Moss invasion in lawns is often due to soil compaction, excessive thatch, shade, certain soil types, poor drainage, and improper lawn maintenance. The moist and shaded conditions in which moss thrives typically lead to its proliferation during spring and autumn. If left unchecked, moss can swiftly dominate and weaken your grass, causing damage that is difficult to reverse.

Maintaining a moss-free lawn is crucial for ensuring it remains robust and healthy and displays a vibrant green appearance. Teresa Keogh, puzzled about how to eradicate and prevent moss after cutting her grass, sought advice on the Gardening Hints and Tips Facebook group.

She posted: “Just cut a lawn full of moss how can I get more grass less moss?”

In response, fellow gardening enthusiasts in the comments section proposed solutions such as manually raking out the moss or using a targeted treatment like Pro-Kleen Iron Sulphate.

This product acts as a potent, iron-rich fertiliser that not only promotes vigorous growth and deep green colour in grass but also simultaneously eradicates moss.

Glenn Mallinson advised: “Buy the Pro-Kleen Iron Sulphate, cut lawn, spray with the sulphate, all your moss will die off and go black in three days, then rake out, spray again, leave, reseed, and cover with topsoil.”

One homeowner shared their experience: “My lawn was full, but adopting the above, it’s become less maintenance year on year. Don’t be scared either, you’ll think you have ruined your lawn, but you will be fine.”

Demi Lition cautioned: “The Pro-Kleen Iron Sulphate is the way to go but take it easy on the dosage as it may destroy the healthy lawn too.”

They continued: “When moss goes brown, rake it out. Then you need to sow some lawn seeds in the empty areas and apply a layer of topsoil as your existing lawn won’t cover that empty area before weeds do or more moss grows.”

Andrew Levett concurred: “Iron sulphate, I do mine once a year to fix this. A lush green lawn looks so much nicer than patchy old moss and weeds. I use the one from Pro-Kleen.”

Stephen Honeyman also swore by the treatment: “Iron sulphate. It will kill the moss in lawns fast overnight, and the grass will turn much greener, grow really fast and thicker.”

Alan Ross shared his recent success: “Iron sulphate, been busy at that today and can see results already. Keep it watered and your lawn will be good.”
