When it comes to cleaning your bathroom, getting into all the nooks and crannies to ensure its sparkling clean can feel like quite the challenge. But even after all of that, you might still be missing one hidden spot that can cause some serious damage later on if left untreated, and is a hotspot for mould. Out of sight out of mind doesn’t quite apply to this part of your bathroom, which can result in mould and mildew building up if not cleaned regularly.

Thanks to how well hidden it is, it’s likely it might have been quite some time since it’s been given a good scrub. After polishing your shower screen or door, you should also be giving your shower track a once over to prevent any mould and mildew making a home there. As it’s constantly being splashed with hot water, leaving the area damp can lead to some serious dirt which could be bad for you and your shower door. 

Cleaning expert and CEO of MaidForYou Delah Gomasi shared that neglecting this area could mean “you’ll find it harder to slide the door open and shut” and you might find you’re “dragging dirt under the glass when you slide it open”.

Just because the dirt isn’t visible, doesn’t mean it’s not there, and mould and mildew thrive in damp, dirty environments. 

It’s not just you that could be suffering from the build up either, but also your shower door, with Gomasi explaining that “sliding the shower door over grit or hard debris will damage the edge of the glass pane over time”.

Fortunately this is easily remedied by following a few simple steps. Beginning by removing any obvious loose dirt, make sure the shower tracks are completely dry before scooping any buildup out using a brush or vacuum. Using a smaller vacuum attachment will make it easier to get everything out of the area. 

Next up, vinegar will help kill any mould that has built up over time. Pour the cleaning solution into the track, letting it get to work before using a brush to scrub the tracks clean. You can also use dishwashing liquid and warm water here instead. 

Remove any dirt that’s been scrubbed away with a sponge or microfibre cloth, making sure to pick it all up before rinsing it one more time. Leave the door open afterwards to let the track fully dry, preventing any moisture and mould. 

You might have to repeat this a few times if there’s quite a bit of build up, and adding this step into your weekly cleaning routine should prevent any mould or mildew build up. Wiping the tracks down after showering will also prevent any damp and dirt growing in the area in the long run.
