All gardeners can make ‘amazing’ hanging baskets for ‘less than £5’

As the spring arrives, lots of people are starting to think about their gardens.

After all, it’s the time of year when many of us want to see more colour and life in our outdoor spaces. One way to do this is by creating beautiful hanging baskets.

Though you may think it’s a tricky task to pull off, one gardening expert said it’s not quite the case. In fact, he claims you can make a gorgeous arrangement for under £5, and it’s easy to do.

Ish, known as gardening.with.ish on TikTok, demonstrated how to pull the task off by using some radiant fuchsia plants. He said you can actually pick the plants up from Morrisons at the moment, and they’re only £1.50 a plant.

To bag the bargains you have to be quick, as he noted they can sell out fast. He managed to create his own floral display for less than a fiver.

He said: “Now, these fuchsias love free-draining soil and they love full sun, so a hanging basket will be absolutely ideal. However, it’s not the biggest amount of space, so try and get a good Organic compost that can hold just a little bit of moisture in – as a result, they will absolutely thrive.

“When it comes to putting your fuchsia in, you can either have them all the same colour, or mix them up, and that’s exactly what I did. £1.50 each – really not the end of the world.

“Once I’ve filled this up, I’ll just dig a little hole like this, and just individually plant those in three corners, leaving enough space in between them.”

Whenever you take a plant out of a pot, he advised people to give it a little squeeze, and the sign of a healthy plant is a good root base. He pops his plants in the little holes one by one, and it’s as simple as that to put together.

Ish said you should also give your basket a good water once everything is planted, and don’t be afraid to hang your baskets somewhere sheltered if frost is forecast. You only need to do this for a few days until the weather warms up.

If you’re wondering when your basket should start to bloom, you should see some success around May. It should stay in bloom until August if you look after it correctly.

Ish said giving the basket a feed every few weeks will help, and following these simple steps should leave you with an “amazing” hanging basket. Based on the comments, it’s fair to say that people seem impressed.

One person said: “Absolutely love your content. You need a slot on Gardner’s World. You’re a natural and you have amazing knowledge.”

A second added: “My fuchsias are still in the greenhouse as I’ve been too scared to take them out. Maybe I’ll bring them out today.”
