I tried 50 cleaning hacks – these are the 9 that will change your life forever

These days, it feels like there’s a cleaning hack for everything – from scrubbing your shower to shining your taps. Scroll through social media and you’ll find thousands of tips promising to make your home sparkle in half the time.

But not all of them actually work. Some are total game-changers and others are a waste of time, leaving you with more mess than you started with. With so many tricks floating around, it can be tough to know which ones are truly worth trying. However, a cleaning expert who has tried 50 cleaning hacks has revealed the nine that have changed her life – and why you should give them a go.

Georgia, who is known as @cleanwithgeorgiia to her more than 135,000 TikTok followers, shared the time-saving tips that take minutes – and can save you both time and energy when freshening up your home.

Shower

For easy shower cleaning, keep a Dishmatic tool (a sponge attached to a washing-up liquid-filled handle) in the bathroom so you can “clean the shower and yourself at the same time”. Every time you have a wash, you can give your shower screen a quick scrub down with the tool to prevent limescale and grime build-up.

Bin

If you want a better smelling bin, try adding Zoflora to a cotton pad and leaving it at the bottom of the bin underneath the next bin liner. Another smell-busting hack involves using shaving foam to deodorise underneath your toilet from urine stains, Georgia says.

Blender

If you’re a smoothie-lover or use a blender for making soups and sauces then Georgia’s hack is for you. You can clean out your blender by putting water and washing up liquid in it, then blending it together. “I’ll be doing that forever now,” she told followers.

Basket method

The next hack is called the “basket method” and involves carrying it around your house whenever it needs a tidy up and putting everything that isn’t where it should be into it. You can then sort the items in the basket and return them to their rightful place. Georgia says this means you’re “not running out of breath trying to put everything away” and explains: “It saves me running around like a headless chicken.”

Removing dust

Soft furnishings in your home like chairs and bed headboards can be dusted with a lint roller. Georgia says they “really do leave no dust behind”. To rid your radiators of dust, you can place a towel underneath and use a hairdryer to blow the dust down and out of the bottom of the vents.

Kitchen cupboards

Kitchen cupboards can take a while to clean, particularly if they are high up. However, simply use a flash mop to clean them without having to use a step or ladder – and it will take no more than five minutes. Finally, Georgia advises that a lemon half with toothpaste on it can be put in your washing machine to get rid of mildew smells.

Cleaning make-up brushes

Another of Georgia’s time-saving hacks includes bringing your dirty make-up brushes into the shower with you, so you can use the water to clean yourself and the brushes at the same time.

“When you’ve got your conditioner soaking into your hair, it’s the perfect time to give them a clean,” she says. She also suggests keeping a window vacuum in the bathroom to dry your shower and bathroom mirror after every use. “You can dry the bathroom down before hard water stains appear,” she explains.

Kitchen counters

The cleaning influencer also uses a window vacuum to clean her kitchen counters. She gives the surfaces a good scrub and then uses the appliances to suck up all the excess water and cleaning product instead of using a cloth or kitchen paper.
