Potatoes will stay fresh three times longer if kept with this 40p item

Potatoes are commonly found in most kitchens. They are a go-to ingredient because they are versatile and affordable. Despite being a pantry favourite, potatoes can go bad before we get around to cooking them.

According to waste management specialists Wheeldon Brothers, a simple trick involving an apple can extend potato freshness up to three times longer. The trick, which gained popularity on social media, works thanks to ethylene gas, which apples naturally release. The experts explained: “Storing potatoes with an apple helps prevent sprouting and keeps them fresher for longer.

“It’s an easy way to reduce waste and make your groceries last.”

Explaining the science behind the hack, the expert said: “Ethylene gas helps regulate the ripening process, which can slow sprouting in potatoes.

“For the best results, combine this method with proper storage – keeping potatoes in a cool, dark, and dry environment.”

Traditionally, storing potatoes in a cupboard or pantry was the go-to method, but nowdays suggests that refrigerating potatoes below 5C extends their shelf life even further.

However, it is crucial to regularly check potatoes for sprouting or green patches, as these can contain harmful toxins.

Experts added: “Sprouted or green potatoes should not be eaten. To keep your potatoes in top condition, store them properly and check them often for any signs of spoilage.”
