A runner has died after collapsing during the Great North Run.
The 29-year-old man felt ill on the route from Newcastle to South Shields yesterday (September 8) and collapsed near the end, bringing the race to a stop.
Emergency services reached him and took him to hospital where he died yesterday. His next of kin has been informed and his cause of death is yet to be determined.
A spokesperson for The Great Run Company said: “With great sadness, The Great Run Company confirms the death of a participant in the Great North Run on Sunday, 8 September 2024.
“A 29-year-old male collapsed, received immediate medical treatment, and later passed away in hospital. His next of kin have been informed.
“The whole organisational team at the Great North Run express their sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
“In respect of the wishes of the participant’s family, no further details will be released. The cause of death will be determined in due course following medical examination.”
