Prince Harry said “no one gave a damn” about certain things to do with him while he was growing up in his bombshell memoir Spare.

The book, which was published early last year, was called Spare to reflect how Prince Harry had always felt like an extra piece, especially as he was the youngest child of a future King.

This meant that unlike William, who is destined to be King one day, Harry was subject to fewer rules, which made him feel like he could “always be spared”.

In his memoir, Harry wrote: “My family had declared me a nullity. The Spare. I didn’t complain about it, but I didn’t need to dwell on it either.

“Far better, in my mind, not to think about certain facts, such as the cardinal rule for royal travel: Pa and William could never be on the same flight together, because there must be no chance of the first and second in line to the throne being wiped out. But no one gave a damn whom I traveled with.” In a telling six-word remark, he added: “The Spare could always be spared.”

The Duke of Sussex also commented on how his purpose in the world was to be available in case something happened to Prince William, whom he nicknamed Willy in the book.

In his memoir, Harry also said the term Spare was often used to describe him within his own family.

He wrote: “They would say it without a spirit of judgement, but straight out. I was the shadow, the supporting actor, the plan B.

“I was brought into this world in case something happened to Willy.”
