The task becomes even more complex given that certain cleaning products are strictly off-limits around pets. While there are simple everyday alternatives, knowing which chemicals pose a risk to pets can make a significant difference.
To simplify the cleaning process, the ISPCA has compiled a list of tips to ensure your home is cleaned safely for any furry friends residing there.
The animal charity warns that many cleaning products are highly dangerous to use around pets, reports the Irish Mirror.
Bleach, or any products containing chlorine, should never be used as they can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, internal burns and even seizures if ingested. Inhaling the fumes could also lead to respiratory illness.
Ammonia, found in window cleaners, stainless steel cleaners, oven cleaners and floor solutions, should also be avoided in homes with pets. It can cause burning in the throat, nose, stomach and respiratory tract.
Certain natural cleaners are also off-limits. Tea Tree cleaner, for instance, is toxic to pets and should never be used around them, even in a diffuser to freshen up the home.
It’s crucial to ensure that other harmful chemicals are securely stored where pets can’t access them. Some products, like dishwasher pods and washing detergent, don’t have pet-safe alternatives, so it’s best to keep them locked away.
So, what can you use instead of these toxic cleaners? Fortunately, there are plenty of affordable everyday options.
Vinegar is an excellent alternative to hazardous chemicals for cleaning, but be aware that some pets may not appreciate its strong odour.
Other items such as lemon juice or baking soda can also serve as effective substitutes for stain removal or general household cleaning if you have pets. These are non-toxic and don’t emit strong smells.
