Jack Draper claims first ATP title and becomes new British No 1 with Matteo Berretini win | Tennis | Sport

Jack Draper has celebrated becoming the new British No.1 by winning his first ATP Tour title at the Boss Open in Stuttgart.

The big left-hander beat former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini 3-6 7-6 6-4.

Draper missed the grasscourt season last year with a shoulder injury and went out in the first round at the French Open.

But the 22-year-old, who had lost his first two ATP Tour finals, has now found his form and fitness just before his home Grand Slam starts on July 1.

Draper, who sealed the win with his 12th ace, said: “It was a really, really tough match. I am really happy to win my first title. It means so much to me.

“I think it is just down to a lot of hard work. There have been a lot of tough moments in the last year or so. A lot of ups and downs. I am really pleased with the way I played.”

New world No.31 Draper, who was already guaranteed to overtake Cam Norrie as the new British No.1, will have little time for celebrations as he will play his first match at the cinch Championships at Queen’s Club on Tuesday.

He faces Argentine Mariano Navone in the first round – with French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz his likely opponent in the second round.

“I have got to play in London on Tuesday,” he said. “I have got to get home and get in a day’s training. There is not a lot of time to celebrate.”

Draper joins Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer – as well as Berrettini twice – as a winner of the Stuttgart event.

He is the first British man to win on the ATP Tour since Dan Evans lifted his second title at the Citi Open final in Washington last August.

Meanwhile, Berrettini paid tribute to his team during the trophy presentation.

The Italian said: “Thanks to my team. A special team. We only know what we’ve been through. So many ups and downs. So many injures and situations.

“Sometimes I wish there were cameras behind the scenes to see how many things we have to deal with. That’s part of the sport and life. I’m so proud to have you next to me. You give me strength when I feel like I don’t have any more.”
