A frantic search has been launched for two swimmers feared missing and in peril off the UK coast, as coastguard and lifeboat teams intensify their efforts in the choppy waters.
The duo was last spotted around 6pm in the vicinity of Plymouth Hoe, in Plymouth, Devon, with no further sightings reported. The search operation this evening has escalated, involving three lifeboats, a coastguard helicopter, and police units.
Devon and Cornwall Police have released a statement calling for the missing swimmers to make contact if they are safe, highlighting that officers are supporting coastal authorities in the extensive search. “Officers were notified at around 6pm this evening [Monday 1 July] to a concern of welfare of two swimmers seen in the water at West Hoe, Plymouth,” the police disclosed.
“Police and the RNLI are assisting HM Coastguard in the search and resources are currently deployed in the vicinity.”
Inspector Roger Hocking issued an urgent plea to anyone who might have information: “We are asking members of the public to contact us if they were in the vicinity of ASH Buoy (a green channel marker buoy) near the Waterside / Wet Wok eateries and saw anything that could assist us in our enquiries. We are keen to identify the two swimmers and ensure they are safe and well.”
The police are urging witnesses or those with relevant details to step forward, advising: “If you are able to provide any information please call us quoting log 699 01/07/24.”
A representative for HM Coastguard told Plymouth Live: “HM Coastguard has been coordinating the response to reports of swimmers in difficulty in Plymouth Hoe today (1 July). Alerted just after 6.15pm, Plymouth and Tamar coastguard rescue teams have been sent to the scene, in addition to the HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter, Plymouth All-Weather Lifeboat and Plymouth Inshore Lifeboat.”
This incident follows a recent tragedy where a 14-year-old boy disappeared while swimming in the River Mersey at the weekend. The teenager, whose identity is yet to be revealed, was separated from his friends on Sunday evening.
Despite the efforts of emergency services, including the coastguard and North West Ambulance Service, they were unable to locate him as darkness fell.
