Popular 70p toilet cleaning hack makes stains ‘worse’ – 2 ‘powerful’ items to use instead

Minerals in your water supply can lead to brown, red, green and even black stains in your toilet bowl.

This may be particularly bad in hard water areas where homeowners will likely notice limescale building up more quickly in toilet bowls, around taps, in kettles and on shower glass.

Removing toilet stains can be tricky as it often involves bending down and scrubbing for hours.

Instead, people often resort to using cleaning hacks they’ve come across online and on social media.

With this in mind, Laura Harnett, a cleaning expert at Seep eco cleaning tools has shared which hack people should avoid when removing stains from their toilets.

The cleaning expert claimed cola should be avoided as it could make stains worse than they already are.

However, on TikTok, hacks involving using 70p supermarket cola in toilets have garnered more than 150 million views.

Laura told Express.co.uk: “Cola is not a disinfectant so it won’t remove any germs or bacteria from your loo so it’s not effective for the nasties you can’t see.

“What’s more, it’s so dark and sugary that it could make your toilet stains even worse.”

The best natural method to clean your toilet, according to Laura, is white vinegar and lemon juice.

She said: “They are the two most powerful eco-cleaning products in the cupboard.

“They are both acidic which means they are a natural disinfectant as well as cutting through stains and limescale.”

Laura also shared a warning about using certain cleaning products in your toilets.

She added: “One other thing to be very careful of when cleaning the toilet, is not to mix white vinegar with bleach.

“They’ll have a chemical reaction which releases chlorine gas which is very dangerous.”
