Calls for used car ‘incentives’ and financial ‘grants’ to encourage second-hand sales

Paul Barker, editor of Auto Express said: “The used market underpins everything, so giving people the confidence to trust that a used EV is the best place for their hard-earned cash will be a huge factor in getting the UK on the road to mass EV adoption.

“Health checks to give a real-world condition of a used car’s battery would also help boost confidence, as would any sort of incentive for buying a used EV – be it a grant, contribution towards charging or some other way to boost interest.

“More used demand means higher used car prices, which leads to better monthly rates on new EVs, stimulating new car sales as well as used.”

Research from carwow reveals a staggering 56 percent would buy an EV if they could afford it.

Over half said they would be more inclined to switch if there were grants available at the point of purchase.

Another survey from the motoring specialists found that subsidising the cost of new and used EVs was top of the agenda.

When asked if there was one policy the new Government could implement to support EV owners, almost one in four (23 percent) said this would make the biggest difference.

However, Iain Reid, head of editorial at carwow revealed that it was unlikely the policy would be adopted by either of the main parties.

Labour’s manifesto has directly addressed the need to look at the used EV market and hopes to change battery travelling to provide more support to potential buyers.

Meanwhile, the Conservatives do not promise any incentives for motorists who purchase electric models after previously scrapping the plug-in grant for new models.

Iain explained: “Whoever makes up the next Government will have to make tough decisions on how it spends our money.

“And against that background, it may be hard to justify stimulating consumer demand in new electric vehicles by offering subsidies.”
