Nick Kyrgios requests to play with Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon as tennis icon eyes return | Tennis | Sport

Nick Kyrgios has revealed that he is keen to play with Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon while he recovers from his recent surgery.

The Aussie underwent ‘secret’ major surgery on his left wrist after the recurring injury made it difficult for him to even open a car door without feeling serious pain, as well as in January 2023 for a knee problem.

Kyrgios was therefore forced to go under the knife at the Calvary Adelaide Hospital which meant that retiring from tennis became a real possibility, but he has worked around the clock since the surgery to ensure that he did not have to hang up his racquet for good.

Kyrgios will only be at Wimbledon this summer as a pundit, though the 29-year-old has hinted that he would be keen to play with Djokovic whilst he is in attendance to get up to speed.

He told the Canberra Times: “If he (Djokovic) wants to have a hit at Wimbledon I wouldn’t mind at all. “That’s where my level was when I left. It’d be good to get back into it.

“Just to be in that environment, not necessarily participating in the tournament, but getting around it again and feeling like normal, it would be great.”

Kyrgios has also played down expectations that he will be back to his best upon his return to the court, revealing that he will be thankful just to be competing in tournaments and giving a good account of himself on the world stage.

Asked about how his mentality has changed since his latest surgery, he said: “I’m expected to go win, which is bulls— in my opinion. There will be players on tour that are ranked 40th in the world and if I play them in a first-round they’ll say, ‘Oh Kyrgios should win in straight sets’.
