Liam Broady feared he’d miss Wimbledon due to freak injury | Tennis | Sport

Liam Broady has revealed he suffered dizziness and slurred speech after suffering a freak concussion injury hitting his head on his car boot.

The British No.6 reached the Wimbledon third round last year when he shocked world No.4 Casper Ruud in five sets.

But the Stockport star admitted he feared he would miss a return to SW19 after his latest injury setback last month. (June)

“I was in an NCP car park and as I opened the boot, a load of tennis balls fell out, and as I stood back up after picking them up, I knocked my head,” the wildcard recalled. “It hurt so much.

“The next day I practised and after 45 minutes, I got a migraine, my eyes went a bit funny. I couldn’t really see.

“I checked my phone and it was like I had dyslexia, I couldn’t read words. I was slurring my speech. I felt nauseous. Really strange emotions.

“A bizarre experience. I had some pretty intense symptoms. I was out for 13 or 14 days. I had a bit of an egg on my head.”

Broady, who faces Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp today, missed the Australian Open with an ankle injury which became a stress fracture in March.

He added: “It has been the most frustrating six months of my life. I was worried I would miss Wimbledon. It was the last week of my ankle rehab and I couldn’t put the load into that recovery.

“The last few weeks I have just felt old with so many aches and pains. It has been a chaotic few weeks for sure.

“It has been like bailing water out of a sinking ship, trying to get fit and sorting out my head injury. I am glad I have made it in one piece.”
