Lando Norris talks up fighting Max Verstappen as rivalry threatens to turn sour | F1 | Sport

Lando Norris insists he will take the fight to Max Verstappen after being left furious by the Red Bull star last weekend. The McLaren driver feels he had his Austrian Grand Prix ended prematurely by Verstappen, who he has accused of driving recklessly.

Norris and Verstappen clashed on lap 64 in Austria, leaving both cars damaged. While Verstappen was able to continue and finish fifth, Norris was forced to retire his vehicle.

The 24-year-old made no secret of his fury towards Verstappen after the race and urged the Dutchman to take the blame for their collision. In a new interview, Norris has said that he would not change how he approached the fight with his rival as they competed to lead the race.

Speaking on Radio X, Norris said: “I reviewed everything, we’ve gone over stuff, and let’s say I won’t really change what I did. I was fighting, and that’s what we want – we want to fight.

“We don’t want to complain, we don’t want things to end like they did, both from my Max’s side and from my side. So, that’s life sometimes.

“We’re fighting, we both want to win, and we’re going to push it to the limits – some slightly more than others.”

He added: “At the same time, I’m excited. We’re going to have more fights together, and I look forward to those times.”

Norris had told Sky Sports in the immediate aftermath of the race: “I did nothing wrong – he was the one in the wrong, so he’s the one that should say something, not me.”

Verstappen was handed a 10-second penalty for his part in the incident. The 26-year-old dropped down the field and the race was ultimately won by Mercedes’ George Russell.

He questioned Norris’ driving, saying: “I felt like sometimes these dive bombs, you’re so late on the brakes that one time you go straight, one time I had to go around the sausage [kerb] or whatever you call it, otherwise we would have touched as well.

“So I think it’s also just the shape of the corner which provides these kinds of issues sometimes. I mean, I’ve had it also the other way around, it is what it is. It’s just never nice of course to come together.”
