Keir Starmer to meet with under fire Joe Biden at the White House | Politics | News

Keir Starmer is set to meet with under fire US President Joe Biden during a NATO summit on Wednesday.

The new Prime Minister will use the White House meeting to underline the importance of the special relationship and reiterate Britain’s “unwavering” support for Ukraine.

Starmer is also expected to give Volodymyr Zelensky his reassurances during talks on the sidelines of the summit, held in Washington to commemorate NATO’s 75th anniversary.

Biden is currently fighting for his political future as senior Democrats lead calls for him to step down after a disastrous CNN debate with Donald Trump last month.

A statement from the White House said: “The leaders will have the opportunity to discuss in depth U.S.-UK cooperation across a range of issues, including support to Ukraine, advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific, reaching a ceasefire and hostage release deal in Gaza, ensuring that Iran can never obtain a nuclear weapon, and strengthening the coalition to confront Iranian-backed Houthi threats to commercial shipping.

“The leaders will also discuss furthering our bilateral cooperation in areas such as protecting advanced technologies and developing climate and clean energy solutions.”

DON’T MISS:

Last week, Starmer’s Labour Party ended 14 years of Conservative rule by taking 412 seats in the General Election to secure a majority of 174.

The Conservative Party suffered its worst ever defeat, securing just 121 seats on a humiliating night.

The Liberal Democrats won their highest tally of seats since 1923, taking 72.

The SNP won nine seats, while Nigel Farage’s Reform UK secured five. Plaid Cymru and the Green Party took four each.

Twenty three seats were won by other parties in Northern Ireland and independent candidates.
