According to the man of Kitchen Tips Online, who has gathered over 226,000 subscribers on YouTube, there is a great (if unusual) hack for storing potatoes.
While his first recommendation is to store potatoes in a basement, many homes in the UK don’t have access to such a room.
If the kitchen is the only place you can realistically store potatoes in your home, then there’s a “genius” method for keeping potatoes fresh.
On the YouTube video, it’s captioned that this “genius kitchen hack will keep your potatoes fresh and delicious for months”.
“What I do,” he began, “is use a cooking sheet with a rack.” The mature gentleman elaborated stating he puts the unwashed potatoes side by side on the rack.
He emphasised: “Don’t wash the potatoes; don’t disrupt the skin of the potatoes, and definitely don’t put moisture on [them] before you store them.
“I take the potatoes and I distribute them equally on the sheet pan and I put it in a drawer in my kitchen.”
He added: “There you go, folks, now you know the best way to store potatoes long-term in a kitchen if you don’t have a root cellar.”
Lots of fans commented on the video thanking him for the potato storage hack, saying it’s been a “big help”.
Tesco claimed potatoes can stay fresh “for up to six months” if you store them the way they recommend.
First, potatoes need to be stored in a mesh or paper bag, which is kept away from other fresh produce.
They must be stored in a cool, dark place (below 10C) so a cupboard right next to the oven isn’t going to be ideal.
