Common mistake people make when trying to sleep in a heatwave

The UK is currently basking in a heatwave, which while enjoyable for sun-seekers, can wreak havoc on sleep quality.

Given the infrequency of such high temperatures in Britain, most households do not have air conditioning units like those found in hotels or holiday homes. According to Which? experts, these units are costly and consume as much energy in an hour as a fridge does in a day.

Fortunately, there are more economical ways to stay cool. However, one common mistake people make at night could actually increase their discomfort.

Which? has compiled a guide to help those struggling with the heat, particularly when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep.

Many spend hours tossing and turning, switching between duvets and blankets, and seeking the elusive cool side of the pillow. Even the presence of an electric fan doesn’t always aid in falling asleep.

Consequently, many believe that the best way to stay cool is to strip down to their underwear for sleep – a popular choice regardless of the weather.

However, experts suggest that sleeping naked might not be the best way to stay cool. Instead, they recommend wearing thin, loose, cotton-based clothing which can act as a wick for sweat, increasing the surface area for evaporation and helping you feel cooler.

In addition to wearing the right clothes, consuming certain types of food during a heatwave can also help to lower your body temperature.

During warm weather, cold salads, chilled soups, pre-cooked meats and quiches, and fruit – particularly melon and citrus fruits – are ideal choices. These foods are not only quick and easy to prepare but also prevent the need to use the hob or oven, thus avoiding further heating up your home.
