Blueberries last longer if you avoid common storage mistake when you refrigerate them


Blueberries will last longer if you skip one common step many people make when preparing and cleaning them for the fridge.

Nathan Lyon, chef, cookbook author, and host of A Lyon in the Kitchen on Discovery Health, explained how exactly blueberries are best kept.

Blueberries have a tendency to spoil rapidly, so it’s best not to store them at room temperature, the expert told Martha Stewart.

Two important rules are: avoiding washing them with water and not keeping too many of them in one container.

And if you have more blueberries than you know what to do with, you can always add them into a pie, as decoration for a dessert or with your yoghurt in the morning.

To extend the shelf life of blueberries, you can freeze them using Washington State University’s simple guidance.

First, rinse the blueberries thoroughly and dry them completely before freezing. Proper drying is crucial to prevent the berries from clumping together.

Afterwards, arrange the washed and dried blueberries in a single layer on a baking sheet. This step helps keep the berries separate and prevents them from sticking together.

Then, place the baking sheet in the freezer and allow the berries to freeze until solid.

Once frozen, transfer the blueberries to an airtight container or freezer bag for long-term storage.
