All UK Android users warned, check one setting on your phone today

A new alert has been pushed out to Android users and ignoring it could put devices at greater risk of cyber attack and data stealing malware. The latest warning, which has been pushed out by the UK team at Action Fraud, is urging Android owners to check their settings and make sure all the latest software updates have been installed.

“Don’t make life easier for cyber criminals,” Action Fraud said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“Protect your #android devices from the latest threats by installing the latest software and app updates.”

All of the biggest phone and software providers push out regular upgrades which often fix bugs and protect devices from known attacks.

For example, Google and Samsung have just released the August patch which mends a large number of glitches. Of 46 flaws found, one was given the dreaded ‘zero-day’ rating which means it is being actively exploited on phones.  Not installing these updates can clearly leave things vulnerable to cyber crooks intent on stealing personal data.

“Cyber criminals exploit weaknesses in software and apps to access your sensitive personal data, but providers are continually working to keep you secure by releasing regular updates,” Action Fraud explained. “These updates fix weaknesses, so criminals can’t access your data. Using the latest versions of software, apps and operating system on your phone, tablet, or smart device can immediately improve your security.

“Remember to update regularly, or set your phone, tablet or smart device to automatically update so you don’t have to think about it.”

You can check your device is up to date via the Settings menu. It’s also possible to switch on automatic installs which download bug fixes without you having to perform things manually.

Of course, it’s not just Android phones that get regular patches. Apple also releases software updates throughout the year as well so iPhone owners would also be wise to follow this advice.

HOW TO UPDATE ANDROID PHONES

Step 1. Go to Settings > tap Software update.

Step 2. Tap Download and install.

Step 3. If new software is available, you can choose Install now, Schedule install or Later.

HOW TO UPDATE APPLE PHONES

Step 1. Go to Settings > tap General > Software update.

Step 2. Tap Update Now

Step 3. If new software is available, you can also choose to Update Tonight.

If you don’t think you’ve updated things in a while then now is a good time to check. Just remember that your device will need to restart so don’t perform the install if you are waiting for an important call or text.
