Spanish locals have started branding Brits who go out drinking whilst on holiday an offensive term. The slang word “guiri”, pronounced ‘guee-ree’, is actually a Basque term to denote someone “blonde” and “fair-skinned”.
However, it also can be used to refer to holidaymakers that go out and make noise, usually while drinking excessively.
According to The Sun, Spaniards have been known to shout “hola guiri” at tourists, which may make some people feel unwelcome.
The publication writes that residents in holiday resorts are less likely to brand visitors a “guiri” if they integrate into the local culture.
Discussions around the term come amid overtourism protests across Spain.
Earlier this year the Canary Islands saw “respect our land” demonstrations. Meanwhile in the Balearics protesters took the streets their too, demanding controls on tourism.
In Majorca, a new date for another protest has been revealed, which may leave Brits concerned for their summer breaks.
‘Less Tourism, More Life’, who was behind the July 21 demonstration in Palma where locals took to the streets to protest against overtourism, held its fourth open assembly yesterday, August 21.
Around 50 people attended the assembly in Lloseta, a small municipality in the district of Raiguer in Majorca.
A key date being considered for the next protest is September 27, the UN’s World Tourism Day.
