Fans of cleaning and lifestyle influencer Mrs Hinch have shared their go-to method for removing weeds from patios and paving slabs.

Angie King posted on the Facebook group, ‘Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips’: “Hello I read on here about weed killer using white vinegar, washing up liquid, and another ingredient but stupidly did not write it down. Does someone know the amount and the other ingredient? I would be very grateful. Thank you.”

The post was inundated with responses but “salt” was the most suggested ingredient to add to the solution.

Eleanor Lambley said: “Yep salt… Put a gallon of vinegar to one cup of salt and a tablespoon of washing up liquid.”

Maureen Purchase agreed and wrote: “Did mine yesterday. It works brilliantly. Killed off weeds between slabs. Just sprayed and all gone.”

Jane Doran commented: “A litre of vinegar, three tablespoons of salt and two of washing up liquid, mix thoroughly and either use a spray or an old squeezy bottle.”

Kenneth Fulton posted: “Four cups of vinegar to one cup of water and add a tablespoon of dish liquid. That’s it.”

Jane Doran said: “It certainly kills my weeds completely on paths, my driveways and behind my garage where there are loads of. So as long as it is in areas where you will not be growing anything it’s perfect.”

This eco-friendly homemade weed killer can tackle persistent weeds on paving slabs, patios and driveways.

The vinegar and salt dries out the weeds while the washing-up liquid helps it stick to the weeds.

As salt draws moisture from the plants and disrupts their internal water balance, it’s important the weedkiller is only used on weeds and not in other areas where plants grow as it will kill them too.

Other suggestions for killing weeds included using just salt, vinegar, boiling water or a similar homemade weed killer with lemon juice.

Barbara Jenkinson said: “I have poured salt on my weeds and it seems to be doing a good job on its own.”

Barbara Hopkins commented: “I just use vinegar, but it will also kill the grass.”

Karen Haley replied: “Boiling water works too.”

Sandra Perkins wrote: “I use four parts vinegar, 1 part lemon juice and a tablespoon of washing up liquid. I try to spray the weeds as they pop and are not too big. For larger-leafed weeds, I reapply until it goes brown.
